Carpool in India:Carpooling in Delhi, Mumbai: Save Money, Save Planet

Do people in India know anything about carpooling? Carpooling is a fantastic concept where by 2 or more people mutually decide to share their cars while going towards close by destinations. The best example is of people living close by and travel to work with their offices located at a reasonably small distance. So, if you you are traveling from place A to place B and that is 10 Kms away, and your neighbor also travels close to place B then instead of both of you driving in your own cars, you share a ride. You take your car for a week, and your neighbor drives you to work in his car the next week. Both of you mutually decide the frequency and the schedules.

How does carpooling help? Well, I am sure you would have guessed the immense benefits car sharing brings:

  1. You save on expensive petrol or gas.
  2. You effectively help reduce traffic on the road
  3. You reduce pollution
  4. Your cars wear and tear is cut by half thus prolonging its operating life and resale value
  5. Your driving related stress is cut by half

Just to give you an example of how much you can save, let us say you travel 10 Kms per day to work each way. So, for 5 days a week you travel 10 kms X 2 X 5 days = 100 Kms per week or 400 Kms per month. Given the average car mileage of 8 Kms to a litre, you will need 50 Litres of petrol, which converts to about Rs. 2500. So if you share your ride, you will save Rs. 1250. The best part is, this savings comes to you with benefits mentioned above. So while you save money, your stress levels are lower, you are more relaxed and you also contribute big time to the environment by reducing traffic and pollution and lowering the wear and tear of your Automobile.
