Delhi School Stampede in Khajuri Khas: Children Killed, Who is To Blame?

Five girls were killed and at least 27 other students injured in a stampede triggered by rumors about a short circuit due to water logging in a government-run school in Khajuri Khas, North East Delhi on September 10, 2009.

The incident was reported from Government Senior Secondary School in Khajuri Khas.

“Five girl students were killed in the incident while 32 students were injured,” Joint Commissioner (New Delhi) Dharmendra Kumar said.

Out of the 27 students injured, 26 are girls. The injured were taken to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where they are being treated. Some of the students are reported to be badly hurt.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has rushed to the hospital to meet the injured and has ordered inquiry into the mishap. She wants to know who how this confusion was created that caused the stampede. The probe will also try to find out why there were no fire escapes or emergency exits in the school.

“There was a stampede as some of the children on the first floor were asked to come down and others were asked to go up and apparently the staircase was very narrow. Most of the children got stuck there,” Kumar said.

Sources said the stampede was caused by a rumor about short circuit and current passing through the building.

However, there was no official confirmation on this.

Political parties will now swing into action with the opposition blaming the ruling party about being negligent with school authorities. People will defend and some will attack to make the best of the opportunities. They will announce compensations to the bereaved families. Media will flash pictures and videos 25,000 times per minute, repeating the same shots over and over again till the viewers throw up!

In the end, nothing will have changed. The school authorities will run the school the same way the used to, the politicians will get busy with God knows what, and the poor people who suffered will have o go back living their lives which would have been altered sadly, very drasctically, because some people in the school was not doing their jobs.

How can any amount of money cover their loss? The only fair thing would be to fire the school authorities from their jobs and maybe even put them behind bars for a couple of years.   That’s the only way to put a message across for the others that you have got to be accountable. Don’t just “be there” to get paid for not doing your jobs! Shame on you guys, you are the killers of those innocent children. I am sue, if there is justice in this word, you will suffer!
